Post Petroleum Engineering

Introduction



The Petroleum Engineering program is primarily concerned with the economic extraction of oil and gas. This is accomplished through the design, drilling and operations of well systems, and the integrated management of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The Petroleum Engineering program provides a foundation for the professional development of its students. The graduates of the program should be able to work as petroleum engineers for oil companies, service companies and for research institutes as research engineers, or to pursue their graduate studies. The Petroleum Engineering program provides a foundation for the professional development of its students. The faculty of the Petroleum Engineering program is committed to provide an academic environment that encourages active learning, teamwork activities, and high-quality student performance.

The department of Petroleum Engineering was founded in 1989. The graduated session was in 1994. Petroleum Engineering is the practical applied basic sciences to the development , recover, control, and evaluation of petroleum reservoir. The department aims at graduating engineering who would help in the need of the country in this major and to have national engineering career to KOC, KISR, University, Ministry, and any other area of Petroleum applications and studies.

The number of graduating students is "126" and the number enrolled studtens now is "119" students. The number of faculty members at the department is "18", two of them are professors, three are associate Prof. and the rest are assistant Prof. That makes the department the second largest department in PE arroound the world in the ratio of faculty members to students.

The activities of the department are not only teaching but also giving short courses and experiment services to KOC and other companies. The program of graduate studies started on 2001, and the number of studients who are studing for their Ms degrees 27 students.

The department organized the " Kuwait International Petroleum Conference and Exhibition " which was held for the first time in Kuwait with the cooperation of KFAS, KOC, and some other companies in Kuwait.

At the education exchange agreement between Kuwait and Japan, two groups of students and faculty members visited Japan in 2002 and 2003 and Four students finished their eight weeks training course in summer 2003. On the other hand two students finished their training course in the USA on the behalf of Chevron Texaco, while Schulmberger provided the department with a computer software " Eclipse " which costs arround sixteen millions of dollars.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering at Kuwait University has adapted the outcome requirements of ABET EC 2000 Criterion as a process for future evaluation. The achievement of these outcomes by the graduates of the program plays a major role in achieving the Program Goals and supports the mission of the program. The Petroleum Engineering Department has worked extensively on the continual improvement of the assessment processes which have been one of the major priorities since 1998. The department efforts have been concentrated on establishing a structured and systematic process for continual assessment and improvement. Thus far, the Department has been successful in implementing the following:

By adapting the outcome requirements of ABET EC 2000 Criterion, our program adapted new methods for teaching and for evaluation of student performance. These efforts have also affected positively the preparation of the present Questionnaire.

To provide a modern petroleum engineering education with proper balance between theory and practice, and to graduate petroleum engineers prepared for life-long learning and capable of being productive contributors for the oil and gas industry.

curriculum

The curriculum is designed according to international standards and is tailored to meet the needs of Kuwait. It is founded on a well-balanced combination of theoretical and practical aspects of Petroleum Engineering. The branches of Petroleum Engineering include Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering and Production Engineering. A set of elective courses is offered for the student to develop an in-depth knowledge in one of the major areas of the Petroleum Engineering Industry. These courses include: Drilling in Abnormal Pressure Zones, Directional Drilling, Fractured Reservoir Characterization, Petroleum Economics, etc. The program is supported by six laboratories, namely: PVT,Subsurface mapping, Reservoir Rocks, Drilling Mud and Cement, Well Logging, and Research Laboratories. These laboratories are used for both teaching and research activities.

The Petroleum Engineering Department is unique among other engineering departments at Kuwait University having a compulsory summer training program. This practical experience is meant to reinforce the student academic background, to broaden his/her industrial perspective, and to provide the student with a healthy environment for efficient team work.

Each student majoring in Petroleum Engineering must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 144 credits. In addition to the common 73 credit component required of all Engineering students and described under Core Engineering Curriculum, Petroleum Engineering students must satisfactorily complete the following 71-credit departmental program as indicated below.

تعتبر هندسة البترول تطبيقاً لعلوم أساسية كالكيمياء والفيزياء والرياضيات والجيولوجيا لدراسة تدفق الزيت والغاز والماء في المكامن البترولية وطرق إنتاجهم بالإضافة إلى المعالجة السطحية للزيت والغاز والماء المنتج ويقدم برنامج هندسة البترول والذي تم وضع مقرراته تبعاً للمستويات العالمية المتعارف عليها مع تطويعها لاحتياجات الكويت مفهوماً متوازياً لعمليات الحفر والإنتاج وتقييم التكوينات البترولية وهندسة المكامن على وجه الخصوص
ويهدف منهاج الدراسة بالقسم إلى تخريج كوادر هندسية محلية تساهم في إدارة الموارد الطبيعية والوفيرة من الزيت والغاز التي تتمتع بها الكويت بأفضل الطرق التقنية والاقتصادية بالإضافة إلى تكوين الخلفية العلمية الأساسية التي تمكن المهندس من متابعة الدراسة بأي من الجامعات العالمية أو معاهد الأبحاث

مجالات عمل الخريج
هناك أكثر من مجال لعمل خريج هندسة البترول وتتركز فرص العمل في ثلاثة أماكن رئيسية

الشركات البترولية المنتجة : وبها يتخصص المهندس في أحد التخصصات الرئيسية كهندسة المكامن أو الإنتاج أو الحفر بشعبهم المختلفة وتعتبر شركة نفط الكويت مثلاً واضحاً لشركة بترولية منتجة

شركات الخدمات البترولية : وتختص مثل هذه الشركات بتنفيذ عمليات متخصصة كتسجيلات الآبار أو إعداد طين الحفر أو القيام بعملية تثبيت أنابيب التبطين بالإسمنت أو قياس زاوية انحراف البئر أثناء عملية الحفر إلى غيرها من العمليات الدقيقة الأخرى حيث أن العمل في هذه الشركات يكسب مهندس البترول خبرة عالمية ممتازة إلى جانب المردود المادي الكبير

الأبحاث والدراسات الاقتصادية : تعتبر الجامعات ومعاهد الأبحاث من الأماكن الرئيسية في مجال إجراء البحوث الخاصة بصناعة البترول هذا بالإضافة إلى اتجاه كثير من الشركات سواء كانت منتجة أو خدمات إلى تشييد مختبرات الأبحاث الخاصة بها وتعتبر الوزارات كوزارة الكهرباء والماء من الأماكن الأساسية التي قد يعمل بها مهندس البترول لإجراء الدراسات الاقتصادية الخاصة بالبترول والطاقة

كما يمكن لخريج هندسـة البترول الانتساب لمنظمة الدول العربية المصدرة للنفط ( OAPEC ) أو منظمة الدول المصدرة ( OPEC ) لاحتواء هاتين المنظمتين على أقسام وإدارات خاصة بالأبحاث الاستراتيجية للنفط

ويمكن لمهندس البترول كذلك العمل في وزارة النفط التي تعتبر الجهة الرقابية والجهة المتابعة لأعمال الشركات النفطية التابعة لها إلى جانب القيام بإعداد دراسات اقتصادية نفطية تساهم في رسم وتخطيط مستقبل الكويت
